Digital UX Designer

About the Role

We are hiring a Digital UXDesigner with strong hands-on experience delivering UK Government digitalservices in line with the GDS Service Standard, and the ability to designin code using HTML, CSS, and component libraries. This is adelivery-focused role embedded within agile teams working on high-impact publicservices. You'll champion user-centred design while ensuring your work can beimplemented directly or easily handed off to developers in a code-ready state.

What You'll Do

You will be responsible fordesigning user-centred digital journeys for services used by citizens andprofessionals across government, ensuring usability, accessibility, and GDScompliance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design accessible, inclusive, and responsiveservice interfaces using GDS Design System components or equivalent designsystems.
  • Produce code-ready prototypes using HTML, CSS, anddesign system libraries (e.g. GOV.UK Frontend, NHS.UK Frontend).
  • Collaborate daily with user researchers,developers, service designers, and product managers to iterate designsbased on user needs and research evidence.
  • Participate in and prepare for GDS serviceassessments, ensuring design artefacts and rationale are well-documented.
  • Support and lead collaborative design activitiesincluding sketching workshops, ideation sessions, and co-design with usersand stakeholders.
  • Translate user research and analytics data intoactionable design decisions, advocating for user needs at all stages.
  • Implement or work closely with developers to ensuredesign fidelity in production.
  • Contribute to the evolution of internal designstandards, design-to-code workflows, and best practice for public servicedelivery.
Requirements

Required Experience and Skills

  • Significant experience (5+ years) working as a UXDesigner or Interaction Designer on UK Government or NHS digital services.
  • Deep understanding of the GDS Service Standard,GOV.UK Design System, and service design lifecycle (Discovery, Alpha,Beta, Live).
  • Strong practical experience in designing in code,including proficiency in:
  • Semantic HTML5
  • CSS (including BEM, responsive layout principles)
  • Use of design systems (e.g. GOV.UK Frontend, NHSFrontend, Bootstrap-based systems)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of WCAG 2.2 accessibilitystandards and inclusive design best practices.
  • Familiarity with Git-based workflows, versioncontrol, and design handoff tools.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, AdobeXD, or Sketch where appropriate-but with a focus on workingdesign-to-code where feasible.
  • Familiarity with agile ways of working and deliveryin multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with templating frameworks (e.g.Nunjucks or Handlebars) or CMS-based component integrations.
  • Understanding of front-end performanceconsiderations, responsive design, and progressive enhancement.
  • Experience running or contributing to usabilitytesting and design critiques.
  • Exposure to working in environments subject toformal service assessments or internal assurance (e.g. GDS, NHS DDaT, orequivalent).
  • Passion for mentoring or supporting other designersto build capability in design-to-code practices.
