Job Description

The Technical Director must be proficient in preparing and switching video elements during live and pre-recorded productions in control room environments. Work is done while ensuring all content meets ESPN's high standards of quality and will be performed in a fast-paced environment for a wide variety of studio shows and events.

Responsibilities:

  • Focus on major areas of work, typically 20% or more of role
  • Operate all broadcast equipment and technology within assigned operating areas
  • Build and maintain effects for various productions, providing communication and documentation to the Technical Directing team
  • Demonstrate solid knowledge of plant signal flow and routing
  • Ensure video signal quality control according to ESPN standards
  • Participate in special event coverage and projects as needed
  • Train others in operational areas and generate training documentation if required
  • File reports on working conditions, equipment status, and personal development upon management request
  • Participate in training programs for career development and workflow updates
  • Perform other duties to help achieve business objectives

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of practical content production or related experience at regional, large market, or network level
  • Proficient with all TV production equipment and technology in assigned areas
  • Flexible with shifts, including nights and weekends, and willing to work overtime
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines, independently, and manage multiple projects
  • Understanding of workflow in other business units and their impact on production
  • Strong organizational, efficiency, and planning skills
  • Adaptability to changing environments
  • Good computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and communication skills
  • Effective problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
  • Proactively seeks information to improve processes and educate others

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Knowledge of broadcast communications equipment
  • Understanding remote event workflows and terminology
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience with regional or national live events
  • Experience with Grass Valley switchers and automation

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Studio Production, or related field
  • Vocational training or related experience

Additional Information: Includes physical requirements, holiday, night, and weekend shifts.
