Job Description

About The Role

Are you an experienced freshwater ecologist ready to take the next step as a Senior Consultant? Do you want to develop your technical expertise, project management confidence, and client-facing skills while working alongside some of the industry's most respected Principal Consultants? Are you looking for a role that can flex to your interests/skill set, whether you prefer desk-based analysis, field surveys, or a mix to suit your needs?

We're looking for a Senior Consultant - Hydroecology to join our growing Water Science team. This is a rare opportunity to develop your expertise and leadership under the guidance of APEM's established Principals-making this ideal for someone early in their senior career or a confident Consultant ready to progress.

This role offers flexibility: if you love being outdoors, survey work can form a significant part of your role (up to 50% during survey season). If you prefer a desk-based, data-driven focus there's room for that too. Either way, you'll be part of a collaborative, expert team delivering high-quality environmental assessments and shaping meaningful outcomes for our water industry clients.

You'll have the chance to work on projects driven by the Water Framework Directive and Habitats Directive-helping regulators, water companies, and developers solve complex environmental challenges.

To be successful in this role, you'll need:
  • A relevant BSc or MSc, plus 3+ years' professional experience in freshwater environmental work
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills across macroinvertebrates, macrophytes and/or diatoms
  • A flair for clear, insightful reporting and communication
  • A growing confidence in project management-with the ambition to soon lead your own projects
  • Practical experience of freshwater ecology survey methods and fieldwork with the option to tailor your focus towards either field or desk-based work
  • A collaborative mindset, able to work across disciplines and engage confidently with clients and stakeholders
  • Excellent attention to detail and numerical skills
  • The ability to deliver high-quality work to time and budget

Desirable (but not essential):
  • Experience mentoring junior staff
  • Familiarity with tender writing or client proposals
  • A valid UK driving licence
  • GIS capability (ArcGIS/QGIS)
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (or working towards it)

At APEM, we balance technical excellence with flexibility and wellbeing. You'll be supported to develop at your own pace, with opportunities to gain responsibility over time as you grow into an accomplished Senior Consultant. Our values-Integrity, Quality, People, Forward Thinking, Positivity, and Fairness-are at the heart of everything we do. Our remote-first working culture ensures you can shape your role in a way that suits your career and life.

You will be offered the chance to work on a variety of projects, many of our employees have worked on projects that have been of personal interest to them. We match this with a commitment to continuous development and learning to support your career. We also offer benefits to look after you, from private medical insurance for all employees, access to mental health first aiders and comprehensive income protection if you cannot work.
