Our client is a local authority based in South West London and they require a Principal Planning Officer within their Development Management team. Reporting to the Area Manager you will to take a lead role within the team managing major and complex planning applications and dealing with contentious development control issues. You will undertake projects which will contribute to the regeneration and economic development of the borough. You will also provide advice on a number of major enforcement matters. As a more senior member of the team you will be expected to represent the Council by preparing and presenting expert and professional evidence at public inquiries, informal hearings and in court and you will regularly be required to provide professional advice to Council members, senior officers, applicants and the public on planning applications, development proposals and related matters. You will deputise for the Area Team Leader as required and you will also assist in developing Planning Performance Agreements and providing pre-application advice on complex cases. To carry out this role you will need to be a degree qualified town planner with recent experience of having worked within a local authority development management team. You will also have significant strategic major development experience, working on high profile applications both pre-app and live cases. Key Responsibilities Project Leadership: Take full responsibility for leading large-scale planning applications (TCPA, DNS), ensuring delivery to time, budget, and quality expectations. Strategic Planning Advice: Provide expert planning advice to clients, identify risks and opportunities, and shape planning strategies aligned with project and policy objectives. Client Engagement: Act as a key advisor to clients, managing relationships and representing the business at project meetings, consultations, and hearings. Team Management & Mentoring: Lead and develop project teams, offering guidance, feedback, and mentorship to colleagues across levels. Written Work Oversight: Draft and review complex planning documentation and reports, ensuring consistency and quality. Business Development: Support company growth by building client relationships, identifying new opportunities, and contributing to bids and proposals. Resource Management: Oversee internal resourcing and workflow across projects, ensuring efficient team utilisation and quality delivery. About You Chartered Planner (MRTPI or equivalent), with substantial experience in consultancy or private sector planning. Proven track record in leading infrastructure or renewable energy projects. Skilled at managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects with a high degree of autonomy. Excellent communicator, comfortable presenting to clients, stakeholders, and regulators. Strong leadership and mentoring abilities, with a focus on team development. Strategic thinker with a commercially aware and solution-driven mindset. Active in professional networks, with a demonstrable ability to contribute to business development.
