Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer to join our Technical Office. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both ground engineering and structural design. The candidate will demonstrate experience in the design of typical temporary works designs (working platforms, temporary retaining walls, slope stability assessments, scaffolding, formworks, hoarding, etc.).

Responsibilities
  • Design, manage, or check innovative solutions for complex infrastructure projects, focusing on both geotechnical and structural engineering aspects.
  • Perform structural analysis and design of bespoke reinforced concrete, steel, and timber structures ensuring compliance with Eurocodes and UK standards. Interpret geotechnical ground investigation data and integrate findings into the design process.
  • Conduct finite element analysis (FEA) for soil-structure interaction problems.
  • Collaborate closely with other design disciplines, including geotechnical and structural teams, to ensure a fully integrated design approach.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and professional development.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, design calculations, and construction drawings.
  • Ensure project delivery meets time, budget, and quality requirements.
  • Stay up to date with industry advancements and incorporate innovative approaches into design practices.
  • Represent the design department at internal and external meetings when required.
  • Manage interfaces with external and in-house design teams on behalf of the Design Manager.
  • Liaise with other departments and project teams to coordinate design requirements.
  • Ensure all design work is carried out in accordance with company procedures, maintaining a high level of professionalism.
  • Prepare, manage, or review conceptual designs, ensuring compliance with current legislation while prioritising safety, practicality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Prepare, manage, or review detailed designs, including calculations, design risk assessments, and sketches for working drawings, in accordance with current standards and codes.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on design and constructability issues.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Chartered status (CEng) or be actively working towards chartership or incorporated status with a relevant institution (e.g., ICE, IStructE).
  • Significant experience in structural or ground engineering design for major infrastructure projects. Experience of Temporary Works designs for tunnelling projects (shafts, tunnels & TBM related etc.) is desirable but not essential.
  • Strong knowledge of Eurocodes (EC2, EC3, EC7), British Standards, and UK design regulations.
  • Experience with structural analysis and geotechnical design software.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and construction teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and be flexible to change to suit site requirements and deadlines.
  • German language skills (desirable but not essential).
