(Senior) Laboratory Research Scientist
The Francis Crick Institute Limited
Reporting to: Petr Znamenskiy, Group Leader Contract term: This is a fixed term (36 months) position on Crick terms and conditions of employment. About us The Francis Crick Institute is Europe's largest biomedical research institute under one roof. Our world-class scientists and staff collaborate on vital research to help prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, infectious diseases and neurodegenerative conditions. The Crick is a place for collaboration, innovation and exploration across many disciplines. A space where the brightest minds can pursue big and bold ideas and discover answers to crucial scientific questions. We support them in a dynamic environment which fosters excellence with state-of-the-art infrastructure, cutting-edge facilities, and a creative and curious culture. We've removed traditional boundaries of departments, divisions and disciplines and instead have an open approach that supports every researcher. This gives us the freedom to take risks and carry out high-quality, pioneering research. Creating a space for discovery without boundaries helps us to turn our science into benefits for human health and the economy. The Research Group The Znamenskiy lab studies the relationship between in vivo function, synaptic organization, and molecular identity of cortical neurons. Using the primary visual cortex as a model, we aim to understand how connections between neuronal cell types are organized and how this organization enables the computations they perform. To achieve this, we combine systems and molecular neuroscience approaches and develop new tools to relate gene expression and connectivity to neuronal activity. Our current research focuses on how visual cortical circuits enable animals to interpret the three-dimensional structure of visual scenes. Details of research projects currently being undertaken can be seen at . About the role We are looking for a collaborative, individual to support the lab's spatial transcriptomics pipeline using a custom-built in situ sequencing platform, helping to link in vivo function, gene expression and connectivity of cortical neurons. Individual cortical neurons receive thousands of synaptic inputs and send long-range projections that often broadcast output to multiple target structures. How these connectivity patterns relate to the molecular makeup of individual cells remains poorly understood. To address this question, we combine high-throughput reconstruction of neuronal connectivity using molecular barcodes with single-neuron gene expression analysis through in situ sequencing. Using custom-built in situ sequencing platforms, we measure the expression of hundreds of genes in intact tissue sections alongside viral barcodes, which are used to reconstruct synaptic connections and map projection patterns of individual neurons. We welcome applications from candidates at different stages of their scientific career so this would be an excellent opportunity for recent graduates. Appointment can be made at either Laboratory Research Scientist or Senior Laboratory Research Scientist level, commensurate with experience and achievements. All training will be provided in house. What you will be doing Preparing tissue for in situ sequencing Developing and optimising in situ sequencing protocols Ordering and maintain inventories of in situ sequencing reagents Developing custom gene panels for profiling cell identity and cell state in situ Conducting quality control and preliminary analysis on in situ sequencing data Maintaining and developing the sequencing setup Training other users in this lab and other labs in the collection and analysis of in situ sequencing data A degree or equivalent experience (BSc / MSc for LRS, PhD for SLRS) in Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Bioengineering, or a closely related field Hands on experience with RNA/DNA handling and / or tissue processing (e.g., fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), RNAscope) Experience operating and troubleshooting epifluorescence or confocal microscopes Basic proficiency in a programming language (Python, R, or MATLAB) to conduct quality control, process images, and handle preliminary data analysis Demonstrated ability to independently optimize complex experimental protocols, maintain records, and manage inventories Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to train others and collaborate across projects Experience with in situ sequencing, spatial transcriptomics (e.g., MERFISH, seqFISH, Xenium), or single-cell RNA-seq pipelines (desirable) About Working at the Crick Our values Everyone who works at the Crick has a valuable role to play in advancing the Crick's mission and shaping our culture. Apache Associates
AI Software Engineer - C# .NET
Apache Associates Sheffield, Yorkshire
Apache Associates are currently working with an innovative SaaS organisation that is investing heavily in AI across its products. We're looking for an AI Software Engineer with strong C# .NET experience to join the team and help turn emerging AI capabilities into genuine, production-ready product features. This is an ideal opportunity for a developer who combines strong software engineering fundamentals with hands-on LLM experience and enjoys working in an environment where things move quickly. You'll be taking AI concepts from initial idea and experimentation through to fully integrated, evaluated features within established .NET products. The Role You'll be responsible for building AI-powered capabilities across the product portfolio, working with LLMs, prompt engineering, context design and structured outputs , while ensuring everything you build is robust enough for production. You'll be expected to prototype quickly, but equally importantly, understand where engineering discipline is essential. That means thinking about accuracy, reliability, latency, cost, monitoring, fallbacks and evaluation rather than simply getting an AI feature to work in a demo. You'll work closely with existing engineering teams, Product Managers, Product Owners and subject matter experts to understand the business problem before deciding on the technical solution. Key Responsibilities Design and build prompts, context strategies and LLM integrations for real-world product features. Develop primarily in C# .NET , integrating AI capabilities into established codebases. Build production-grade AI services with appropriate error handling, fallbacks, monitoring and logging. Prototype new ideas quickly and turn successful experiments into robust production features. Develop structured approaches to evaluating LLM outputs , using real business scenarios and measurable results. Work with LLM APIs across different providers and make pragmatic decisions around quality, cost and latency. Use AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or equivalent as part of your day-to-day development. Work alongside existing engineering teams to ensure your solutions fit established coding standards, architecture and deployment pipelines. Keep pace with the rapidly changing AI ecosystem and share new approaches and learning with colleagues. Work with Product and subject matter experts to understand the underlying business problem rather than simply responding to a technical requirement. Ensure AI features are developed with appropriate consideration for accuracy, safety and data handling . Skills and Experience Required You'll need to be a strong software engineer first and foremost, with genuine commercial experience building with AI. We're particularly interested in people who can demonstrate: Strong commercial C# .NET development experience , ideally working within established and potentially long-lived codebases. Hands-on experience building applications using Large Language Models , beyond tutorials or experimentation. Strong knowledge of prompt engineering, context engineering and structured outputs . Experience taking ideas from concept through to working software quickly. Experience evaluating or testing LLM outputs using structured approaches, datasets or real-world business scenarios. Daily experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or similar . A pragmatic approach to software engineering - knowing when to move quickly and when production quality cannot be compromised. The ability to understand and articulate the business problem behind the technology you're building. It would be advantageous if you also have experience with: RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) Agentic workflows and tool use Vector databases/search and embeddings LLM APIs from multiple providers AI evaluation frameworks and automated quality pipelines Modernising or extending long-established software platforms SaaS environments Distributive trades, rental, retail, automotive aftermarket or garage management This isn't a role where you'll spend months working on theoretical AI projects that never reach customers. You'll have the opportunity to build, ship and see your work used in real products . The expectation is that successful ideas can move from concept to production in weeks, while still meeting the standards expected of business-critical software. You'll also have the opportunity to influence how AI is adopted across the wider engineering organisation, sharing your knowledge and helping other developers understand what genuinely works. Within your first six months, you'll ideally have: Shipped an AI capability into an established product with meaningful evaluation behind it. Taken an AI idea from concept to customers within weeks rather than quarters. Used evaluation data to influence product or technical decisions - including being prepared to stop something that simply isn't good enough. Introduced new AI development techniques that other engineers have adopted. Demonstrated a clear understanding of the commercial problem you're solving, not just the technology you're using. If you're a C# .NET developer who is already building with LLMs and wants to work somewhere that is genuinely putting AI into production, we'd be very interested in hearing from you. Apply now or contact Apache Associates for a confidential discussion.
