We are recruiting a qualified Financial Accountant for a well-established, privately owned organisation with several trading and investment entities. It is a varied business with a small finance team, so the role offers far more breadth and ownership than you might find in a larger, more structured environment. You will take responsibility for the quality of the underlying accounts, making sure month-end is completed properly, balance sheets are reconciled and the financial information produced by the team is accurate and dependable. There is also plenty to improve. The business is reviewing its finance systems, strengthening its controls and looking at how key processes can be made clearer and more consistent. You will play an important part in that work, alongside managing the regular accounting cycle. The role Working closely with the senior finance lead, your responsibilities will include: Managing the month-end close across several legal entities Preparing journals, accruals, prepayments and fixed asset entries Producing and reviewing monthly management accounts Completing detailed balance sheet reconciliations and resolving discrepancies Preparing VAT returns and maintaining accurate supporting records Supporting the production of statutory accounts and year-end schedules Coordinating with external accountants, auditors and professional advisers Preparing short-term cash-flow information and monitoring working capital Maintaining appropriate controls around banking, payments and user access Overseeing payroll information and reconciliations in conjunction with an external provider Supporting the transactional finance workload where necessary Improving the quality and consistency of finance procedures Helping with the selection, implementation and testing of new finance technology Reducing reliance on individuals by documenting important processes properly What we're looking for You will be an ACA, ACCA or CIMA-qualified accountant with strong financial accounting experience and a willingness to stay close to the detail. This position should suit somebody who enjoys understanding how the numbers have been put together, rather than simply accepting the final report. You will be comfortable investigating differences, challenging incomplete information and following an issue through until it has been resolved. You are likely to have: Strong month-end and financial accounting experience A good understanding of balance sheet control and reconciliations Experience preparing management accounts Knowledge of VAT, cash flow, payroll accounting and year-end requirements Experience working across several companies, cost centres or business areas Confidence using Excel and accounting software The ability to organise your own workload and meet competing deadlines A practical approach to improving systems and processes Strong attention to detail without losing sight of wider commercial priorities The confidence to work with both finance and non-finance colleagues Experience gained within a privately owned, owner-managed or multi-entity organisation would be useful, although the quality of your accounting experience and your approach to the role will be more important than a particular sector background. Previous involvement in a finance-system change or integration project would also be helpful. The environment This is a down-to-earth business where people are trusted to take responsibility. The finance team is relatively lean, so you will need to be comfortable switching between detailed accounting work, resolving day-to-day issues and contributing to longer-term improvements. The role is predominantly office-based because it works closely with both the finance team and the wider organisation. There is some flexibility, but it will not suit somebody looking for a mainly remote position. Why consider it? The attraction is the level of ownership. You will have responsibility for the accounting cycle, direct exposure to senior decision-makers and the opportunity to improve how the finance function operates. The business has enough complexity to keep the role interesting, but the team is small enough for your contribution to be noticed. It could be a particularly good move for somebody who wants: A broader role than a conventional month-end position Genuine responsibility across several entities Exposure to systems and process improvement A close working relationship with senior management The opportunity to leave the finance function in a stronger position If you are a qualified accountant who enjoys hands-on financial control, solving problems and improving the way things are done, please apply or contact Jason Mitchell at Abbeygate Search for a confidential discussion.

Part Time - 28 hours per week Hybrid working Mondays based in Offices in Central Leeds £50,000-£55,000 FTE which equates to £40,000 - £44,000 Pro Rata for the 28 hours LEEDS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GIVEBRADFORD Head of Finance £50,000-£55,000 FTE 28 hours a week, working pattern to be agreed Leeds, with hybrid working Permanent Mondays in our Leeds office the rest of your week worked flexibly A senior finance role that not only gives a good work-life balance, but a compelling reason to care about the numbers. Many Head of Finance roles demand five days and give you spreadsheets and deadlines. This one asks for the equivalent of four, sits you on our Senior Leadership Team, and puts your finance skills to work for real social purpose across hundreds of community organisations in Leeds and Bradford. If you've reached the point in your career where your time and making a positive difference to the world matter as much as your title, keep reading. Who we are We're Leeds Community Foundation, and together with GiveBradford we've spent the last twenty years connecting people and businesses who want to give with the communities and causes that need it most. Since 2005 we've helped donors invest more than £72 million back into our region, funding the grassroots organisations that are, quite simply, the backbone of these two cities. We do that across four related charities: Leeds Community Foundation itself, GiveBradford, the Old Fire Station community hub in Gipton, and the BG Campbell Trust Fund. Four sets of accounts, four boards, one finance team and a real need for someone to deliver order, insight and confidence across all of it. The role You'll be our number one in finance, the person the Chief Executive, the trustees and the leadership team turn to for a clear, honest view of where we stand financially. It's a genuine leadership role, but it's also hands-on: with a full- time Finance Manager and Finance Officer to lead, you'll know when to train and delegate and when to roll your sleeves up where it counts. Day to day, and across the year, you'll be the person who: Leads budgeting, forecasting, cashflow and long-term financial planning across all four entities, and helps the leadership team make sound decisions with the full picture in front of them; Owns the quality and timeliness of our management accounts, statutory accounts and external audit, and the fund accounting that sits at the heart of what a community foundation does; Gives our boards, the finance and investment subcommittee and our Treasurer the reporting and assurance they need, and keeps our controls, compliance and risk management genuinely robust; Leads our investment and treasury arrangements, working with our investment managers, advisers and banks; Embraces technology to help us continually improve how we work, simplifying and automating alongside our Digital & Data Lead as part of a live transformation programme; Leads, supports and develops the finance team, building a collaborative and improvement-minded culture. Who we're hoping to meet You're a fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with real depth in financial leadership. You'll be someone who's equally comfortable shaping strategy and getting into the detail when it's needed. You know charity finance and fund accounting well, or you're close enough to it that you can be credible in the sector from day one. Just as importantly, you can turn complicated numbers into plain, useful advice for people who don't live in finance, and you've the confidence to offer constructive challenge to senior colleagues and trustees when it matters. If you've worked across multiple entities, overseen investments or treasury, or led a finance system improvement before, so much the better, but none of these is a dealbreaker. What is important is that you have the professional judgement to be our finance lead, and a genuine alignment with our values what we're here to deliver across the community. What's in it for you Beyond a role with real purpose we offer a package we're proud of: £50,000-£55,000 FTE which equates to £40,000 - £44,000 Pro Rata for the 28 hours per week Hybrid working, with Mondays in our central Leeds office and the rest from home or wherever you work best 25 days' annual leave, rising with service, plus statutory days and your birthday off 5% employer pension contribution, alongside a 4% employee contribution Group life assurance paying twice your annual salary Two wellbeing days and 14 hours of volunteering time a year, taken when you need them Discretionary leave over Christmas and New Year, and a faith-based bank holiday swap scheme An Employee Assistance Programme, including access to counselling and legal and financial advice A genuine commitment to your personal development and training Regular full-team away days An internal wellbeing initiative and access to mental health first aiders How we work Monday is our one fixed day together in the Leeds office, the rest of your hours are yours to shape around your life. We actively encourage our team, finance included, to spend time out in the community, at places like the Old Fire Station, seeing exactly where the money goes and why it matters. Interested? The opportunity The Finance and Audit Committee (FAC) provides BIICL's Board of Trustees with oversight and assurance on our finances, controls, investments, and audit. We're looking for a chartered accountant or senior finance leader to chair the Committee and join our Board of Trustees at a pivotal moment: a new Director and CEO, a new Director of Operations in post, and a new strategy launching in 2027. You'll bring real technical credibility and the judgement to translate financial detail into confidence for a Board whose backgrounds are mostly legal and academic. In return, you'll help shape the next chapter of one of the world's most respected independent legal institutes. The current Chair's term ends in December 2026. We are seeking a successor to join in October, allowing time for handover and induction ahead of the November FAC meeting and the December Board meeting. Purpose of the role The Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee provides strategic, non-executive financial oversight rather than day-to-day accounting. As a trustee , you hold joint legal and fiduciary responsibility for the charity's overall governance, strategic direction and financial health. As Committee Chair , you will act as a trusted advisor and critical friend to the Director and Chief Executive and the Director of Operations, ensuring that BIICL's income is robustly governed, financial risks are mitigated, and resources are deployed optimally to deliver maximum social impact. BIICL outsources financial management to a specialist non-profit accountancy firm, overseen internally by the Director of Operations; you'll evaluate how well that arrangement is working and recommend change if needed. Key responsibilities Strategic financial oversight Budgetary scrutiny: oversee the annual £2.5m operational budget and financial forecasts provided by the executive team. Performance monitoring: review quarterly management accounts, analysing variances, cash flow health, and performance against key performance indicators (KPIs). Reserves management: champion the regular review of a robust Reserves Policy to safeguard the charity against sudden funding fluctuations. Investment assets: oversee the performance of the charity's cash reserves and any investment portfolios, ensuring alignment with ethical investment strategies. Audit, risk and internal controls Statutory reporting: lead the FAC in reviewing the Annual Report and Accounts, ensuring compliance with Charity SORP FRS102 and statutory filing deadlines. External audit: manage the relationship with the External Auditor, leading on the tender process and reviewing the post-audit management letter. Risk mitigation: oversee the financial section of the organisation's risk register, ensuring internal controls are sufficient to prevent fraud and compliance failures across complex funding streams, and ensure FAC oversight of the wider Risk Register. Fiscal compliance: monitor compliance with complex tax regimes relevant to this scale, including VAT, Gift Aid, and trading subsidiary operations (as applicable). Committee leadership and Board reporting Meeting governance: set the agenda and chair quarterly FAC meetings, fostering an environment of collaboration, constructive, and high-quality challenge. Board communication: report clearly to the full Board of Trustees, translating complex financial positions into strategic insights for non-financial board members. Statutory trustee duties Legal compliance: ensure the charity complies with charity law, company law, and all other relevant legislation or regulation. Strategic direction: contribute actively to the Board of Trustees in setting the charity's overarching vision, mission, values, and strategic goals. Asset protection: act as a responsible custodian of the charity's assets, ensuring funds are spent solely in furtherance of its charitable objectives. Effective governance: attend and actively participate in full quarterly Board meetings, the Annual General Meeting (AGM), and strategic away days. Collective decision-making: maintain the principle of collective board responsibility, upholding and supporting decisions made by the wider board. Legal and regulatory frameworks The postholder is required to understand, uphold, and apply the following core regulatory frameworks: The 6 Essential Trustee Duties (Charity Commission Guidance CC3): You share collective legal liability to ensure the charity carries out its purpose for the public benefit, complies with its governing document, acts in the charity's best interests, manages resources responsibly, acts with reasonable care and skill, and remains fully accountable. Financial Reporting Standards 102 and the Charities SORP: Because our annual income exceeds £250,000, the accounts must be compiled under the Statement of Recommended Practice (Charities SORP), transparently separating restricted, unrestricted, and designated funds. The Charity Governance Code: Our Board intends to benchmark itself against this code. You will directly champion Principle 5 (Board Effectiveness) and Principle 6 (Risk and Control) to ensure internal controls are regularly evaluated. Person specification Experience and qualifications Financial qualification: chartered status (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) is essential. Senior leadership: proven experience operating as a CFO, Finance Director, or partner in a professional services practice in an organisation of similar or larger scale. Sector expertise: strong working knowledge of Charity SORP, restricted and unrestricted funding, and UK charity law is highly desirable. Governance background: previous experience as a trustee, non-executive director, or committee member is advantageous. Core skills and attributes Strategic clarity: ability to look past the numbers to see systematic risks and strategic opportunities. Collaborative challenge: ability to robustly hold senior staff and third-party advisors to account while maintaining a supportive, professional working relationship. Communication: ability to explain intricate financial matters plainly to non-financial audiences. Commitment to the cause: a demonstrable passion for the charity's core mission and alignment with its values. Terms of appointment Term: Trustee appointments are for a three-year term, renewable for a maximum of two consecutive terms. Time commitment: Trustees are required to commit approximately 8-10 days per year. There are four board meetings, four FAC meetings per year, a strategy day, plus approx. 2-3 hours per month for executive consultation. Location: London/Hybrid - FAC meetings usually take place online; Board meetings and strategic away days are in-person, usually at our London office. Remuneration: This is a voluntary role and is not accompanied by any financial remuneration; however, all reasonable travel and out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed. Reporting to: Board of Trustees / Chair of the Board How to apply To apply formally, please submit a CV and supporting statement, each no more than two sides of A4, clearly outlining your suitability for the role against the criteria in the person specification and your motivation for applying. Please include your home address, contact email, and mobile number. We aim to acknowledge receipt within 2-3 days. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We expect to interview candidates from mid-September with a view to appointing by the end of October.
