Chair of Trustees, The Access to Justice Foundation Voluntary role Access to Justice Foundation (ATJF) underpins a fair and functioning society. Yet across the UK, millions of people face barriers to legal advice and representation, particularly those living in poverty, disabled people and communities in so-called "advice deserts". ATJF is the only UK-wide funder dedicated to increasing the availability of free legal support, advice and representation. In 2024, the Foundation distributed over £14 million in grants to 140 organisations, supporting people facing issues in housing, debt, employment and immigration. Now, as ATJF explores new and potentially transformative funding models, we are seeking an exceptional individual to serve as our next Chair of Trustees. This is an opportunity to lead a committed and capable Board at a pivotal moment. The Chair will provide strategic leadership and strong governance as the Foundation prepares for potential growth in funding scale and increased engagement with government and the legal sector. You will act as an ambassador for ATJF, strengthening relationships across senior stakeholders and helping to ensure the organisation's long-term sustainability and influence. ATJF are therefore seeking a highly respected senior legal professional, practising or retired, with board-level experience and the confidence to chair effectively. You will bring sound strategic judgement, governance experience and financial literacy at trustee level. You will also possess the gravitas and networks to engage confidently with government, the judiciary, regulators and the wider legal profession. Above all, we seek a Chair who is collaborative, inclusive and values-driven; someone who can support and challenge constructively, draw out diverse perspectives and help the organisation continue to evolve while staying true to its mission. This voluntary role requires a meaningful time commitment and a willingness to be visible externally. If you are motivated by social justice and ready to help shape the future of access to legal advice in the UK, we would be delighted to hear from you.
