THE ROLE The Functional Technology Team, within the Research and Development function is responsible for the development and testing of glazing products for the global architectural and automotive strategic business units. You'll support technical work within existing development projects and manufacturing support activities whilst working towards a Degree Apprenticeship at The University of Derby. As a Degree Apprentice your responsibilities will include: Conducting laboratory-based material testing Measurement of material characteristics. Glass fractography for cause of failure assessment. Experimental stress analysis (including strain-gauging and photoelasticity). Optical microscopy via both stereo and polarising microscopes. Statistical analysis and reporting of results Production of Weibull modulus distributions. Application of process capability analysis and confidence interval plots. Testing and characterisation of glazing products Thermal processing, printing or laminating techniques. Temperature, UV and humidity exposure. Spectroscopic assessment techniques. WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? You and your Skills Have A Level (or equivalent) qualifications in Maths, Physics or Engineering. Have 5 GCSE passes including Maths, English and Science. Can learn quickly and act independently, taking personal responsibility to deliver results. Are a self-starter who can work under pressure on their own initiative and able to prioritise workloads to achieve deadlines. THE ROLE An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified individual with a Mechanical Engineering background to join the Engineering team based at the Greengate site on a 12-month fixed term contract. This is a day engineering role, and the successful applicant may in future be required to work at either Float site in St Helens and/or work alternative shift patterns in the future (for which additional payments will be made) to satisfy operational requirements. As part of the Engineering department, the successful applicant will be responsible for all aspects of the maintenance on the Greengate Float & Rolled Production Process and all associated plant, buildings, services comprising of compressed air, gas and cooling water systems. RESPONSIBILITIES The duties include, but are not limited to: Planned preventative maintenance activities to maximise plant reliability; Experience operating manual lathes & millers in an Engineering Machine Shop Fault finding and diagnostics in emergency breakdown or planned situations; Modification and improvement of plant; Hazard identification and elimination; Problem solving; Ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and support and contribute to the site HSE initiatives. Provide Training and mentoring to apprentices and colleagues; Use SAP CMMS system to record maintenance activities and parts used. WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? The successful applicants will have completed a relevant Engineering Apprenticeship and be qualified to NVQ level 3, with proven experience within a similar Technical role. It will be necessary to work unsupervised for extended periods and be capable of identifying, generating and managing own workload which will involve effective communication with Supervision and members of other areas. Applicants must be willing to join the 1-in-9 on call team to provide out of hours coverage in line with the needs of the process and must be flexible to respond to changes in priority or emergency situations which may include operating on a shift system. An agile self-starter with good communication and influencing skills, you will enjoy data analysis and finding innovative solutions. knowledge of statistical analysis would be beneficial, however this is not essential.
