UK Research & Innovation Economist Salary: £45,272 (London allowance of £5,129 if based in London) Hours: Full Time / Part Time (Min 0.8 FTE) Contract Type: Open Ended Location: London or Swindon (Hybrid working available) Closing Date: Monday 4th August 2025 Job Overview This is an exciting opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary analytical team that works on areas at the heart of the UK research and innovation (R&I) system. Our work plays a key role in delivering the government's ambition to strengthen the UK's position as a global science and technology superpower, set out in the UK Science and Technology Framework. The role sits within the Strategic Analysis team (within a wider analysis team and the Investment Planning and Strategy directorate) which has a wide remit including analysis of the Research & Innovation system, Economic Appraisal, Data Science and Thematic Analysis, and analysis for Investment Strategy. Responsibilities Leading on business case analysis, with a focus on economic cases. This would usually require ex-ante value for money analysis with a quantitative component developed in Excel Mentoring junior analysts to deliver economic appraisal projects Supporting evaluation, policy, and science teams in the delivery of the economic component of their evaluation projects. This includes reviewing invitation to tender documents, bids, and early drafts. Supporting analysis for fiscal events and spending reviews Engaging with internal and external analysts to develop robust methodologies and analysis for evaluation of UKRI investments Developing guidance and training for both analysts and non-analytical audiences Supporting the Lead Analyst on the conception and development of key ex-ante and ex-post economic appraisal projects. This would typically require modelling in Excel or R. Running literature and evidence reviews assessing their robustness and relevance. We are looking for people with expertise in quantitative analysis and data management who are keen to develop and apply their skills in a supportive and stimulating environment. The Data Analysis team centralises the data used for analysis in UKRI and it develops the use of data science and statistics to tackle some of the most exciting analytical questions across UKRI. Key responsibilities Lead on major pieces of analytical work using modelling/statistical techniques to solve complex analytical questions and inform decision making communicating outcomes of analysis to analysts and non-analysts in a clear and informative way. Develop expertise on UKRI data and other data sources such as HESA, both to use them yourself and to support other users to query and validate their analyses. Work as part of a team, developing your own technical and non-technical skills, and being an active member of the wider analytical community. Use and develop your analysis skills, in particular quantitative analysis using R (it is not required to know R before you start as training can be provided). Support and advise senior UKRI colleagues on research and innovation funding and allocation decisions based on knowledge and careful interpretation of the evidence base on the impacts of research and innovation investment. Work collaboratively, building new links and directly interacting with and influencing users, customers and other relevant parties. Answer data commissions, including parliamentary questions and freedom of information act requests. About you A relevant degree (if a joint honours should be at least half) or equivalent work experience in statistics, data science, operational research, economics or highly numerate subjects such as mathematics, physics or engineering. Experience working with quantitative data; analysing scenarios and sensitivity analysis. Familiarity with a range of statistical and data science methodologies and techniques (we also provide access to on the job training to support continued professional development). Strong communication skills. Experience analysing and wrangling data with tools such as SQL, R and/or Python (you are not required to know all these tools, but experience with using at least one of them or other data analysis approaches is required).
