You will work on diverse projects, conduct surveys, design mitigation, and contribute to licensing and reports alongside planning and engineering teams. Senior roles include mentoring juniors and taking ownership of complex work while travelling as needed. About The Role You will work closely with our Principal Ecologist across a varied portfolio of projects spanning multiple sectors, with strong links to our existing water utility partnerships and an active pipeline of new opportunities. Day to day, your work will span the full range of ecological consultancy: conducting surveys and assessments, designing and implementing mitigation and enhancement measures, applying for and obtaining protected species licences, and contributing ecological input to multidisciplinary project teams alongside planning, engineering and design colleagues. At the senior level, you will also play an important role in mentoring junior ecologists, helping them develop the skills and confidence to take on more complex work of their own. You will have real autonomy in how you approach your work, backed by an experienced team and access to training and networking opportunities that support your continued professional growth. A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel are required for this role. Your Impact The projects you work on here will shape how biodiversity is considered, protected and enhanced across some of the UK's most significant infrastructure programmes. Your ecological assessments, mitigation strategies and species licences will translate directly into better outcomes for habitats and wildlife that cannot advocate for themselves. Beyond the projects, your influence will be felt in the team around you. By mentoring junior colleagues and helping to build a culture of technical curiosity and high standards, you will leave a mark that lasts well beyond any individual survey or report. About You You hold a minimum BSc in Ecology or a related environmental discipline, and you bring solid consultancy experience alongside a thorough understanding of UK and EU wildlife legislation and policy. You are skilled in preparing PEAs, ECIAs and ecological chapters, contributing to HRAs, and working confidently with UKHab classification and the Defra Biodiversity Metric. You hold a protected species survey licence for at least one species, such as great crested newts or bats, and you have experience with the protected species licensing process. You are equally comfortable managing projects, budgets and client relationships as you are out in the field, and you bring the communication and leadership skills that make teams work well together. Membership of CIEEM or IEMA and proven line management experience would be a welcome addition, though not essential. Working alongside regional and national technical leaders, you will play a key role in delivering freshwater aquatic ecology expertise across a diverse portfolio of projects, supporting clients from the earliest stages of planning and survey design through to environmental assessment, project delivery and long term monitoring. What You'll Be Working On Strategic water resource and drought resilience schemes; Nationally significant infrastructure projects; River restoration and nature recovery initiatives; Fisheries and fish passage assessments; Water Framework Directive (WFD) assessments; Freshwater ecological monitoring programmes; Hydropower and renewable energy developments; and Ecological and environmental impact assessments. No two projects are the same. Your work will directly contribute to understanding, protecting, enhancing and restoring rivers, lakes, reservoirs, canals and other freshwater habitats. You will also have opportunities to collaborate with specialists across ecology, hydrology, hydrogeology, geomorphology, hydraulic modelling, environmental planning and engineering, providing integrated solutions to complex environmental challenges. About You You'll Have A degree in Aquatic Ecology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries Science or a related discipline; Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. CIEEM, IFM or CIWEM), with chartered status desirable for more senior roles, or a willingness to work towards professional accreditation; Experience undertaking, managing or interpreting freshwater ecological surveys and assessments; Knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, planning policy and regulatory frameworks applicable to the jurisdictions in which you work; Experience in one or more areas of freshwater ecology, which may include: Fish, macrophyte, macroinvertebrate or diatom surveys and assessments; Fish passage and barrier assessments; Aquatic habitat surveys and assessments (e.g. habitat walkovers, RHS, RCA and MoRPh ); Hydroecology and environmental flows; River restoration and nature based solutions; Ecological and Environmental Impact Assessment, including EcIA , EIA and Environmental Statement inputs; Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) or equivalent; or WFD assessment and compliance; The ability to undertake technical reporting and communicate scientific information clearly and accurately; Strong written and verbal communication skills; and The ability to contribute to project delivery, client relationships and technical guidance at a level appropriate to your experience. For Principal and Senior Principal grades, we would also welcome experience in Providing technical leadership and mentoring; Designing and managing freshwater survey and monitoring programmes; Managing projects, programmes, budgets and multidisciplinary workstreams; Developing and maintaining strong client and regulatory relationships; Supporting business development and preparing technical and commercial proposals; Undertaking technical review and quality assurance; Leading complex environmental assessments; and Supporting the growth and development of technical services and team capability.
