If you need any help or adjustments to the recruitment process due to health, disability or anything else, please let us know so we can help you to be the best version of yourself. T he role The Phoenix General Counsel team is a group of around 90 passionate lawyers, company secretaries and admin specialists who support Phoenix's business in the UK and Europe. Our teams are organised according to specialism and which bits of the business we support. This role is to support the Phoenix Mortgage Solutions team, which is part of our retirement business. Why does an insurance group have a mortgage business? We're not a bank, but we like mortgages for two reasons. The first is that long-term mortgages (things like equity release mortgages and long-term fixed interest residential mortgages) are a really good investment match for our annuity business. The difference between the yield we make on our mortgage assets and the price of our annuities is the profit we make as a business. The second reason is that we're passionate about doing the right thing for customers and we think the types of mortgage product we like to fund can make a difference, whether that's improving the quality of someone's retirement, helping them support their family or disrupting the residential mortgage market. We're the top funder of equity release mortgages in the UK, we've launched the Standard Life Home Finance range of products with a strategic counterparty, we're working hard to bring new products to market (recently long term buy to let mortgages), and we've got an exciting list of projects lined up for the next few years. What are we looking for? This role doesn't neatly map on to a traditional law firm specialism. The two people in the Mortgage Solutions legal team at the moment come from corporate and banking law backgrounds, but the work we've done over the last year or so includes a joint venture with corporate and intellectual property angles, buying a mortgage portfolio from a competitor, negotiating funding and servicing agreements with new and existing counterparties, intra-group securitisations and contract/BAU advice. Where we need to, we use external firms or involve colleagues from the rest of the legal team (e.g., for certain IP, real estate and corporate issues). The qualities that really matter to us are: You should have some relevant financial services experience, either working in a law firm or for another financial services business. We are open minded, but experience of dealing with mortgage portfolios would be good. Experience of financial services products/regulatory advice would also be good and complement the skills in the team at the moment. How do you react to new challenges and things you might not have come across before? Our work is varied and often novel. If you are an agile problem solver and not afraid to try new things, this might be for you. We are a business partnering team. We exclusively work with the Mortgage Solutions team (around 30 colleagues) and we are part of everything they do. You will need to be willing to invest time and effort in developing solid working relationships with our commercial colleagues. Why choose us? Bring your 'whole self', skills and dedication to the Phoenix Group and we'll recognise your effort, support your development and help to drive your ambition. We'll ensure you're rewarded for your contribution with a competitive package that includes an attractive pension, annual bonus potential, private medical insurance, generous holiday entitlement, enhanced maternity and adoption leave and a range of other financial services and lifestyle flexible benefits.
