The Role As Associate / Senior Civil Engineer / Team Leader, you will play a key role in leading the Civil Engineering team, overseeing technical delivery, managing workloads and supporting the future growth of the business. You will be responsible for the successful delivery of civil engineering projects from concept through to construction, while maintaining strong client relationships and ensuring technical standards, commercial performance and team development are properly managed. The role would suit a Senior Civil Engineer, Associate Civil Engineer or experienced Team Leader who is confident balancing technical design, people management, client engagement and commercial responsibility. Project Types The consultancy works across a varied portfolio of projects, including social and private housing, industrial and commercial developments, retail schemes, healthcare projects, leisure schemes, refurbishment works and new-build developments. The Civil Engineering team is involved in infrastructure design, drainage, highways, external works, Section Agreements, technical approvals, reports, calculations and construction-stage support. Most work is delivered across the North East, with selected projects in other locations where required. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage civil engineering projects from concept design through to planning, tender, construction and completion. Oversee and review drawings, reports, calculations, technical submissions and project information. Manage team workload, project resourcing, delegation, delivery standards and staff development. Support Section Agreements, technical approvals, drainage design, highway design and related infrastructure submissions. Attend client, consultant, contractor and site meetings, representing the business professionally. Support commercial performance, including fee proposals, variations, change control, invoicing and additional fee requests. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants and contractors while contributing to business development, bids and growth planning. Promote a positive team culture aligned with quality, collaboration, technical excellence and continuous improvement. Candidate Requirements Chartered Engineer, or working towards chartership, with significant post-qualification experience in a civil engineering consultancy environment. Proven experience in a senior civil engineering role, ideally with responsibility for technical delivery, client relationships and team leadership. Strong ability to produce and review drainage and highway drawings, design calculations, technical reports and site appraisals. Good knowledge of UK planning procedures and relevant design standards, including Water UK, Sewerage Sector Guidance, Manual for Streets, DMRB and Local Authority Design Guidance. Working knowledge of technical software such as AutoCAD, Causeway Flow, Causeway Live or similar design packages. Strong commercial awareness, with experience of fee management, change control, project resourcing and client-facing delivery. Excellent communication, leadership and engagement skills, with the ability to mentor, manage and develop engineers and technicians. Existing right to work in the UK is required, as the company is not currently able to offer visa sponsorship. Key Responsibilities Lead civil engineering projects from pre-start through to handover, final account and close-out. Manage project teams, subcontractors and supply chain partners to drive safe, efficient and high-quality delivery. Plan and coordinate labour, plant, materials, subcontractors, programme requirements and project resources. Maintain strong health, safety, environmental and quality standards, including Construction Phase Plans, environmental plans, QA processes, inspections and close-out records. Own programme delivery, look-ahead planning, progress reporting, forecasting and recovery planning where required. Work closely with commercial teams on subcontract packages, valuations, progress measurement, change control, CVR input and NEC contract processes. Candidate Requirements Proven experience as a Project Manager delivering civil engineering schemes for a main contractor. Experience on projects such as highways, drainage, roads, structures, public realm, flood alleviation, cycleways, footpaths or similar civils works. Track record of leading projects in the £5m £8m+ range, or managing multiple civil engineering projects concurrently. HND, degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline would be beneficial. Strong practical understanding of NEC contracts, including early warnings, change control, compensation events and risk management. Confident client-facing communication skills, strong reporting ability and good knowledge of digital systems for programme, QA and project reporting. Full UK driving licence, strong organisational skills and the ability to lead from the front, set standards and develop others. Professional membership such as ICE or CIOB would be advantageous but is not essential. This is an excellent opportunity for a Quantity Surveyor with around 2 3 years post-degree experience who is looking to develop within civil engineering, marine infrastructure and heavy civils. The company delivers a varied range of technically interesting projects across the UK, including quay works, jetties, harbours, sea walls, reinforced concrete structures, piling, coastal works, flood defence and wider infrastructure schemes. The role will be primarily office-based in Gateshead, with occasional site visits as required. The Role As Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial management of live civil engineering projects, working closely with the Commercial Manager, Project Managers, site teams, supply chain and clients. You will be involved in subcontract procurement, contract administration, valuations, change control, cost reporting, compensation events, commercial records and final accounts. The role will also include supporting tendering, estimating and supply chain engagement for future projects. This role would suit a Quantity Surveyor who is commercially minded, organised, keen to learn and interested in developing within NEC contracts, heavy civil engineering and marine infrastructure. Key Responsibilities Support the commercial management of live civil engineering projects, including subcontract procurement, supply chain management, interim valuations, payment applications and final accounts. Assist with NEC contract administration, compensation events, change control, risk registers, commercial documentation and accurate project records. Support cost forecasting, CVRs, monthly reporting and wider commercial reviews with the Commercial Manager and project teams. Candidate Requirements Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or a closely related discipline, with around 2 3 years post-degree experience in a Quantity Surveying role. Previous experience within civil engineering, infrastructure, construction or a contractor environment would be beneficial. Good understanding of measurement, valuations, change control, cost reporting and commercial administration. Strong Excel skills, good general IT ability, strong communication skills and the ability to work well with internal teams, clients and the supply chain. Full UK driving licence, right to work in the UK and willingness to travel for short site visits when required. NEC3 or NEC4 experience, contractor-side experience, marine, coastal, piling, reinforced concrete, heavy civils, design-and-build or early contractor involvement exposure would all be advantageous.
