Role Overview: The Night Shift Rail Platform Operative (Cleaning) is responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety across rail platforms and station areas during overnight operations. The role supports a safe and welcoming environment for passengers and staff, while ensuring compliance with rail industry regulations and health & safety standards. Key Responsibilities: Carry out cleaning duties in accordance with station cleaning schedules and operational requirements Clean public-facing areas including platforms, waiting areas, shelters, seating, stairways, lifts, and station facilities Clean and maintain staff and public toilets, ensuring high hygiene standards at all times Empty bins and dispose of waste safely in line with environmental and rail industry procedures Use cleaning equipment and materials correctly and safely (e.g. mops, scrubber machines, and cleaning chemicals) Maintain cleanliness in high-footfall and safety-critical areas, ensuring platforms are free from litter, spillages, and hazards Follow all health & safety procedures, including COSHH regulations and manual handling guidelines Remain vigilant at all times and identify/report hazards such as spillages, obstructions, or damaged infrastructure Support safe working practices within a live rail environment, particularly during train movements or engineering works Work efficiently and independently during night hours while maintaining a high level of attention to detail Comply with all rail security and access requirements, including the use of ID passes and restricted area controls Report maintenance issues, defects, or safety concerns promptly to the relevant teams Communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and other rail staff to ensure smooth operations Requirements: Intermediate level of English (spoken and written) Verifiable references covering the last 5 years Clear criminal record check within the last 5 years Legal right to work in the UK Flexibility to work night shifts, including weekends and public holidays Ability to work in a safety-critical rail environment and follow strict procedures Physically capable of standing, walking, and carrying out cleaning duties for extended periods Desirable (but not essential): Previous cleaning experience in transport, rail, or public environments Knowledge of rail safety standards (e.g. Personal Track Safety - PTS) Experience using industrial cleaning equipment
