Morning shift: 9:00 - 13:00 Afternoon shift: 13:00 - 17:00 Evening shift: 16:45 - 20:00 Details We are looking for reliable and hard working volunteers to assist with general kitchen duties. Assist kitchen staff to provide hospitality and catering services for patients, staff, volunteers, and visitors. Assist kitchen staff to keep the kitchen in a hygienic and serviceable condition. General responsibilities and duties Assist with washing up (dishwasher filling/emptying). Assist with restocking tasks and stock takes. Assist with the preparation/cooking of home cooked food. Provide refreshment service to Reception Volunteers. Prepare patient's drinks trolley. Prepare patient meal trays ahead of service. Prepare dining room for staff/volunteer lunch service. Clean the dining room following lunch service/function (wipe down tables/chairs etc). Prepare and clear down refreshments for any Hospice meetings/functions. Undertake general cleaning duties within the kitchen to maintain a hygienic and serviceable condition. Optional responsibilities and duties on the Inpatient Unit Ensure patient water jugs, glasses/feeder cups are kept replenished and clean. Take food orders from patients. Serve meals to patients and their loved ones. Provide a drinks and afternoon tea trolley service to patients and their loved ones. Ensure patient meal trays and service trolleys are removed from the Inpatient Unit following service. Volunteer Gardener Details Our volunteer gardeners support the provision of a professional gardening and grounds maintenance service for Springhill Hospice and its local satellite sites. Springhill service-users include those with life-limiting illness, their carers and family members and, people with neurological health issues, such as dementia, visiting our day therapies centre. This role will assist in the day-to-day upkeep of our award winning gardens, across all our green spaces including ornamental bedding, mixed shrub and herbaceous displays, woodland, and an allotment, greenhouses and polytunnels. Please note that some roles may be seasonal or AYR, and may be specialised if applicants have specific interests or skills e.g. composting, memorial plant care, crops, lawns, cut flowers, propagation. The hospice working environment will, at times, be physically and emotionally demanding, but it is also very rewarding and fun. Duties Support the Head Gardener with new ornamental displays and projects. Undertake any necessary soil improvement such as digging, manuring and mulching; we follow an organic and mostly no dig regime to enhance biodiversity. Maintain the ornamental borders and beds by weeding, pruning and tying in new growth. Undertake watering when necessary. Monitor health of plants and report the presence of pests and disease; we promote natural predators and remedies. Assist in harvesting crops; most go to our hospice kitchen and some are presented for sale on our cart. Assist in up keep of composting systems. Assist Grounds Maintenance teammates in the up keep of garden furniture, structures, etc. Use PPE and equipment safely, keeping tools clean and reporting any faults to the Head Gardener. Support the promotion of the gardens through our guided tours, corporate volunteer days and Britain in Bloom competitions. Duties Support the Head Gardener with planning the forthcoming seasonal planting schemes, identify current seed stock levels and their viability, and identify seeds that need ordering. Create attractive containers, hanging baskets, planter displays for placing around the site and for sale. Propagate plants, for example sowing seed, division and striking cuttings, to increase our stock for planting and sales; an experimental approach is encouraged. Diligently care for propagated plants to promote their healthy growth, such as watering, feeding, weeding, pruning, staking, potting on and protecting from extreme temperatures. Harden off seedlings in cold frames and, monitor progress and readiness for planting out. Maintain a hygienic environment at all times within their growing environment.
