Head of Design

Role:

• To lead the design department / third party designers and consultants to ensure the design meets with the customers' needs and expectations
• To ensure the design process is adhered to, to enable the project deliverables are met in the most efficient way and eliminating errors through accurate detailing
• To review the contract requirements to ensure the design solution is cost effective and offers best value to M-AR and our customers
• Manage and schedule team workload in line with multiple project requirements, with the assistance of the Head of Operations, to ensure successful and timely completion of work.

Responsibilities:

• Assume overall responsibility for the performance of the M-AR design department.
• Deliver works in line with the M-AR ISO certified standards.
• Take responsibility for maintenance of M-AR accreditations including: BOPAS, ISO and BIM.
• Lead the design department and manage the day to day work of the design team.
• Undertake regular liaison with the team and undertake annual performance appraisals and training as required.
• Identify any skill/training requirements and set strategies for obtaining these.
• Review and manage the software and hardware requirements to allow M-AR to achieve industry best practice.
• Fairly managing performance and disciplinary issues within the design department team.
• Develop detailed design deliverables from tender review meeting.
• Undertake pre-construction buildability and design assessments to support the bid process.
• Generate design deliverable schedules for third party designers/contractors
• Ensure warranty cover in line with contract requirements
• Identify and obtain design fees for third party designers/contractors for incorporation into PCSA/ Tender fees
• Develop a detailed project design programme
• Maintain a cumulative and resourced design programme for all projects
• Develop Preconstruction resource cost for preconstruction department inclusion into estimates
• Offer design advice and information to support tenders or customer requests.
• Attend design review meetings and progress meetings with M-AR team and customers as required.
• Attend and interact in project launch meetings.
• Provide required technical detail for incorporation into project launch meeting
• Provide technical support to the rest of the project team as required
• Provide technical support to sales and marketing team
• Liaise with specialist subcontractors to extract and develop information for incorporation in the design.
• Offer participation in the project leader role through intense design lead projects
• Ensure the nominated project leader is kept updated in relation to the design process of the project
• Hold technical operatives and third-party designers/contractors to account for design realisation
• Ensure designs and details are checked against and meet customer needs / requirements
• Flag any potential issues to the team prior to them manifesting into a serious issue
• Present to the rest of the project team project risks and opportunities
• Work closely with and build / develop good working relationship with customer and customer representatives
• Develop the technical standards and maintain a high standard of presentation
• Develop the existing library of standardised details
• Develop and implement BIM processes and standards within the business and wider stakeholders
• Maintain brand / design consistency throughout the design process
• Have a working knowledge of Statutory Regulations and Codes of Practice
• Commit to continuous personal development and maintain an appetite to challenge the status quo.

Accountability:

• Meeting all Design Deliverables in full
• Maintaining a Design Programme so that deliverables are completed on time
• Ensuring Design Documentation is fully controlled and accessible by all parties
• Consultants and M-AR designers deliver best value and cost effectiveness
• Demonstrating and reporting on improved efficiency in the design process
• Customer rates our design process "Excellent" on every project
